Applying for a Blue Badge
You or your child may be eligible if there are sensory processing differences that increase the risk of flight or make it difficult or unsafe to walk longer distances or navigate public spaces. This can include:
- Sensory processing differences (including flight risk)
- Autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions
- Severe anxiety or distress in public environments
- Challenges with awareness of danger or road safety
A diagnosis is helpful but not essential, what matters most is how you or your child is affected day to day.
To apply, you can visit the official government website:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge (You can also contact your local council if you need support with the application.)

3 Simple Steps to Apply
Step 1: Explain Your Child’s Daily Challenges
Describe how your child’s needs affect them when out in the community.
- Include sensory issues, anxiety, and safety concerns
- Give real examples (e.g. distress in car parks, running off, difficulty walking distances)
- Explain why being able to park close by is essential for safety
Step 2: Provide Supporting Evidence
Include documents that show your child’s needs.
- Medical or professional reports (e.g. GP, paediatrician, school, SENCO)
- Evidence of support needs, even without a diagnosis
- Make sure it links clearly to risk, safety, and daily challenges
Step 3: Show the Full Impact
Use the application to explain the wider impact on your child and family.
- Emotional distress and anxiety
- Physical or sensory overload
- Safety risks (e.g. bolting, lack of danger awareness)
- The challenges of managing outings as a family
The key is to show why a Blue Badge is essential for safety and access, not just convenience.
