Applying for a Disabled Bus Pass
You may be eligible if you or your child experience sensory processing differences or have a condition that makes travelling or being in public spaces challenging, overwhelming, or unsafe.
This can include:
Having a disabled bus pass entitles you to:
- Free travel on all standard bus services in England:
- After 9.30am on Monday–Friday, all day Saturday, Sunday, and Public Holidays
- Excludes special night-time or other special services
- Before 9.30am Monday–Friday:
- Charges may apply
- Ordinary fares apply outside these boundaries
A disabled bus pass can be particularly important for children or adults with mobility, sensory, or cognitive challenges, helping make travel safer and less stressful.

3 Simple Steps to Apply
Step 1: Explain Your Need
- Outline why a disabled bus pass is essential for you or your child.
- Include mobility, sensory, or cognitive needs that make public transport challenging, for example:
- Sensory overload on busy buses or noisy stations
- Anxiety or distress in crowded or unpredictable environments
- Difficulty standing for long periods or walking to stops
- Reliance on public transport for school, work, appointments, or essential travel
Step 2: Provide Supporting Evidence
- Proof of residency (bank statement, utility bill, or council tax letter)
- Proof of disability, sensory condition, or qualifying benefit
- MAIN can provide a supporting evidence letter, give at least two weeks’ notice if required
- Include professional or educational documentation where possible (e.g., GP, paediatrician, SENCO, or occupational therapist reports)
Step 3: Send Your Application
You can submit your application by post, online, or in person:

- Access the application form from your Local Authority:

- Redcar & Cleveland – Login or Register | Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Bus Pass
- Stockton on Tees – Apply for or renew a disability bus pass – Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
- Send your completed form, proof of eligibility, and passport-sized photo
Online:
- Scan or photograph your completed form, proof of eligibility, and passport photo
- Upload through the council’s secure document submission system
In Person:
- Call your Local Authority to book an appointment
- Bring your completed form and proof of eligibility; staff will take your photo on-site
