The NHS app can be overwhelming.
Here are some tips to help guide you through, following a three-step approach to using the NHS app as a trusted adult.
Step 1: Get Set Up
- The NHS App can be used to manage your own healthcare and, where appropriate, to help manage someone else’s healthcare.
- If you are a parent, carer or family member living in the same household, you may be able to access another person’s NHS App account if:
- they are registered with the same GP practice;
- they give their consent (where they have the capacity to do so); and
- you register this arrangement through the GP practice.
- This can be particularly helpful for supporting appointments, prescriptions, test results and other aspects of healthcare.
Step 2: Read Information in Context
- The NHS App provides access to test results, GP notes and other health information.
- These records are written primarily for healthcare professionals and may contain medical terminology or wording that can seem worrying when read on its own.
- From a neurodiverse perspective, it is common for some people to focus on a particular word, phrase or result and spend time worrying about its meaning, rather than seeing the overall clinical picture. This can understandably increase anxiety if information is interpreted without the wider clinical context.
- Reading information carefully and remembering that it forms only one part of the overall assessment can help avoid unnecessary concern.
Step 3: Check, Ask and Reassure.
- Avoid drawing conclusions from a single test result, phrase or clinical note.
- If something is unclear or causes concern, speak to your GP or another healthcare professional who can explain what it means in the context of the person’s overall health.
- The NHS App is a valuable tool for helping people stay informed and involved in healthcare, but it works best when information is understood alongside professional advice.
- If additional support would be helpful, I would be happy to come and speak with parents and carers about using the NHS App and how it can be used confidently and appropriately.
